Zeeland on two wheels — an app that guides and inspires

Business context

The Province of Zeeland is responsible for promoting the region across living, working, education and leisure, developing, among other things, the ecosystem around Zeeland.com. In response to the growing popularity of eco-tourism and active leisure, the regional authorities identified an opportunity to strengthen Zeeland’s image as the ideal destination for cycling tourism.

The goal was to provide residents and tourists with an easy-to-use mobile tool that would make it easier to discover routes, plan rides and explore local attractions. The initiative was intended to combine the promotion of Zeeland’s heritage and nature with real practical value for visitors.

Challenge

The key challenge was to design an app that intuitively combines three needs: discovering cycling routes, conveniently purchasing or configuring custom ride options, and navigating in the field. It was also essential to integrate POI points so that users could quickly find nearby attractions, cafés or bike repair points.

At the same time, it was necessary to ensure seamless performance on iOS and Android, as well as a consistent user experience for a broad audience — from residents to tourists visiting the region for the first time. Clarity of information on the map and reliability during rides were also crucial.

Solution

Leaware developed the Zeeland-fietroutes app using Xamarin, delivering the solution simultaneously on iOS and Android. Development in a cross-platform model shortened time to market and ensured functional and visual consistency across both platforms.

The app allows users to browse available cycling routes, purchase them or configure their own variants, and use real-time navigation. Users can view POI points on the map, including attractions, cafés and bike services, making it easier to plan stops and enriching the overall travel experience.

The chosen approach combined the region’s natural and cultural assets with digital functionality, creating a practical tool that supports the promotion of the local tourism offering and encourages people to explore Zeeland on two wheels.
