One portal, many unions — Bafo simplifies insurance management

Client: Bafo

Business context

Bafo, part of Norwegian Broker and affiliated with Söderberg & Partners and Brokerslink, operates within one of the largest brokerage ecosystems in the Nordic region, with affiliations in 133 countries. The company serves numerous trade unions that expect tailored offers and consistent service quality, despite differing brands and terms.

In 2015, as the digitalisation of the insurance sector accelerated, Bafo identified the need to provide users with a self-service, modern online channel. The goal was to create a single, efficient web portal that would enable policy purchases, review of existing insurance cover, and self-service data updates, while also delivering distinct experiences for different trade unions.

The portal was intended to consolidate fragmented processes, increase service availability across popular operating systems, and ensure scalability and ease of further development, without losing the flexibility required to support multiple brands.

Challenge

The key challenge was to build a universal portal that would simultaneously meet the specific requirements of members of multiple trade unions. Users needed to be able to purchase insurance easily, review current policies, and update their data independently, without needing to contact an adviser.

The solution had to support a multi-brand model — different visual identities, varied offers, and communication tailored to each union — while maintaining a shared, consistent functional core. Security and data separation between entities were also essential, as were high availability and reliability.

An additional requirement was full browser-based availability on popular operating systems (macOS and Windows), to ensure broad adoption without the need to install additional software.

Solution

Leaware built a robust, user-friendly portal for Bafo based on ASP.NET MVC and web technologies. The architecture was designed in a modular way, with a clear separation between the shared functional core and the branding and configuration layers specific to individual unions, enabling efficient support for multiple brands within a single environment.

The portal provides a complete set of self-service features: purchasing insurance in just a few steps, viewing existing policies, and editing personal data. Intuitive navigation and a responsive interface ensure a smooth browser-based user experience on both macOS and Windows, increasing service accessibility and reducing support costs.

Thanks to standardised processes and flexible configuration, Bafo can efficiently manage offers and communication for different unions, maintaining a consistent standard of quality and security while adapting to the expectations of specific user groups.
